Nick Heidfeld Profile

When somebody stands in front of the camera and states: “My result is a catastrophe!” its immediately disarms reporters. In 2008 Nick Heidfeld experienced the most difficult season of his motorsport career, which spans a total of 20 years. Even in extremely painful moments he persevered. He lost points through tyres which did not easily achieve operating temperature during Qualifying. But, he managed to retain his character. He is self-confident and brutally honest.
He quietly reflected on the complexity of using the full potential of his tyres over a single lap; managed to contain himself on the circuit without resorting to heroics. Above all, he worked through the problem and solved it with the assistance of his engineers.
A realistic level of self-confidence forms the basis of his openness. Questioned during the summer of 2008 whether he was worried about retaining his job, he parried with: “No, I’m worried about my qualifying performance. It just needs to be on a par with my race performance, then everything else will fall into place.”
Nick races because it brings him great pleasure. He can take credit for five of the best overtaking manoeuvres of 2008 – having overtaken two cars at once on every occasion. He has received praised from his team boss for his duelling ability and race intelligence, and has found his dream job. Hhe wears his heart on his sleeve to prove it – but glows with the inner satisfaction that comes through experience.
During interviews he is unafraid to touch on off-track topics. Whether art, fashion, travelling, or his family, the mop-haired driver openly discusses them all. He has managed to protect his family members without hiding them, and loves having them around. He constantly refers to Patricia, to whom he is happily married, and their offspring. “Children are the best,” he swoons, and beams as he relates the toddling attempts of son Joda, born in 2007, and joyfully receives faxes from Juni, their two year older daughter.
“I find it difficult to be strict with them,” he admits, “and I still need to learn that.” The balance between discipline and freedom is of utmost importance to him, particularly whilst travelling. He is, though, often the last driver to leave his engineer’s office in the paddock on a Friday night, having analysed and discussed the data in great detail, then repeated the process. But, thereafter he does his thing. He tours the places his profession takes him to. Wandering about, shopping, visiting art galleries are as much a part of his extra-mural programme as are visits to Disney World with his family. Fine dining is another passion; a strict fitness regime, though, ensures that his muscular jockey-type physique remains trim.
In 2008 Nick made it to the finish line in every one of the season’s 18 races. However, he holds an unwanted record: no other driver has finished second as often without winning a race as has Nick. So far he has had but one realistic chance of winning. That came at the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix, when he was on a one-stop strategy and was perfectly placed in the race. Had it not been his team-mate Robert Kubica, driving a strategically lighter car, who mounted a challenge from behind, there would have been no yielding.
During the BMW Sauber F1 Team’s 2006 debut season Nick’s third place in Hungary provided the young team with its first podium place. The following year saw him secure its maiden front-row starting position and two further podium places. In 2008 he twice set the fastest lap, and finished twice four times. His hopes for 2009 are: “That we are able to challenge for the championship with a car that is capable of victory despite the radical rule changes.” Nick Heidfeld wants to win.
