Robert Kubica Profile

At times this young man can be tiring. Possibly ‘tiring’ is the wrong term to use when describing Robert Kubica in a single word. ‘Demanding’ would probably be a better description. That fits perfectly. Demanding – not just towards others, but towards himself. The Pole always seeks the maximum, and preferably immediately, without detours. Patience is not one of his virtues. And that can at times be very demanding. Because occasionally ones needs patience in Formula One.
But those who have followed Robert’s life to date immediately recognise why he is who he is. Having hailed from a country without Formula One tradition, he refused to let go of his dream of driving in Formula One; having exchanged the comfort of his family home in Krakow at age 13 to race and work on karts in faraway Italy, he slept in the garage above his machine; having overcome the fear of losing his right arm after suffering a serious road accident, then preparing with iron will in the hospital for his comeback, he won a race only weeks later; having achieved all this in a short space of time, he knows: I can achieve a whole lot more.
“In everything he does he displays an incredible will to win,” says his manager Daniele Morelli. The glitzy circus surrounding Formula One does not impress Robert one iota. He accepts that commitments towards sponsors, partners and the media are as much part of the job as are photo- and autograph sessions. Ideally, though, he would prefer to sit in the car from morning to night in order to test or race. That is his life; where he feels most comfortable. “He is very focussed,” says BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen. “I am totally normal,” counters Robert.
Anyone who spends a precious few free days racing karts or watching rallies, preferably alone or accompanied by his girlfriend, must be incurably infected by the motorsport virus. Anyone who replies ‘a Formula One two-seater’ when asked which would be his ideal wedding car, or chooses car, tyres and fuel to accompany to him to a lonely desert island, must be made of special stuff. For him, though, this is utter normality. As are poker or bowls, two further passions.
For him it was also totally normal to adopt a radical diet prior to the 2008 season. The team had mentioned that losing a few kilograms would have a positive effect on the balance of the car. No sooner said than done. And thus Robert lost seven kilograms by the start of the season. Once again he was hard on himself, proving he will do everything for success.
His first full Formula One season, namely 2007, did not go according to plan, particularly in view of the fact that Robert had scored a podium place the previous year in only his third F1 race, the Italian Grand Prix. Then there was the moment when Formula One held its breath. Montreal, Canadian GP, lap 27: Robert was involved in one of the most spectacular accidents in recent F1 history. He ripped off his front wing on Jarno Trulli’s Toyota, his car flew into the air, crashed uncontrollably into a wall, bounced off, rolled multiple times, scattered parts across the track, then crashed into another wall. It seemed impossible that a human being could escape from such a wreck without serious injury. Yet Robert had a guardian angel: apart from a sprained ankle he was uninjured.
Ironically it was at Montreal precisely a year later that Robert added a chapter to Formula One’s history. On 8th June he scored a historic first victory for the BMW Sauber F1 Team, thus becoming the first Pole to make it to the top step of the F1 podium. Nick Heidfeld’s second place perfected the team’s double victory. But Robert wanted more. After his victory in Canada he led the Drivers’ World Championship, a lead he had no intention of relinquishing as his aim was to win the title in only his second full Formula One season. However the cool gambler from Krakow was forced to accept that his mount was not yet championship-winning material. The competition from McLaren and Ferrari was just too stiff. 2009, though, must be different. He has demanded that from himself and his team.
